OPEN CALL: THREE RYE LANE MURALS

Get It Done has been appointed by Southwark Council to lead the commissioning of three new murals for Rye Lane, Peckham. We’re looking for three artists based in or connected to Peckham to propose a meaningful mural concept for our themes.

For full brief please click on the document here:

Through this project we aim to:

  • Create three meaningful, culturally resonant and timeless murals for Rye Lane

  • Capture the people that have shaped Peckham to be the place it is today

  • Celebrate overlooked communities and highlight important issues that local people face

  • Complement Peckham’s creative offer, as an area of outstanding culture in London

  • Platform and develop three local artists

  • Create the start of a buildable ‘art trail’ for local artists and organisations to add to in the future

The Commission

We are looking for three Artists (or Artist Collectives) to produce three new murals down Rye Lane. Each mural centres around a different theme, as indicated below.

Each artist will receive a fee of £4,000 exclusive of VAT. We anticipate that c.£1,000 of this fee will be dedicated to community engagement and contextual research. The rest of the fee is for finalising a design and installing the mural artworks. We have a separate production budget for materials, wall preparation etc.

You are welcome to apply for more than one mural but please clearly outline your separate concepts for each theme in the application. We will prioritise meaningful and contextually researched responses and so a copy and paste will not be accepted. You will only be selected for a maximum of one mural.

1. FLAVOURS OF RYE LANE

Our ‘food stories’ mural aims to celebrate the rich culinary landscape of Rye Lane, highlighting the variety of fresh groceries and international foods available from local market stalls. Food provides a powerful way to learn about people, exchange ideas, and to understand and experience different cultures. We encourage artists to explore how food serves as a connector within our community, reflecting the stories of street stall-holders, residents, and the road’s gritty, grassroots spirit.

2. LIVE FROM THE RYE

This mural will spotlight Peckham’s musical culture, tracing its grassroots origins from sound systems and punk gigs to raves, jazz nights, and record labels. Artists are encouraged to reflect on how these musical traditions have shaped local identities and brought connections through shared rhythms.

Your artwork could capture movement, dancing, performance, street parties, queer spaces,old- school record shops or just the joy of people coming together over tunes. You could chart a timeline from Peckham’s musical history into Rye Lane’s future soundscapes. This mural hopes to create a conversation between the past, present, and future of music in our community, celebrating its role to bring people together.

3. RESISTANCE & RESILIENCE

This mural will explore Peckham’s history as a community that has actively resisted challenges over the years. It may reflect significant moments of local activism, showcasing how residents have come together to advocate for their rights and those of others, highlighting Peckham’s role as a site of protest.

Your design could highlight the resilience of grassroots communities, illustrating their determination to thrive despite obstacles. It could also depict Peckham as a safe space where individuals are protected and celebrated for their differences. By connecting past struggles with future hopes, this mural will serve as a powerful reminder that we’re united in the fight of both our individual and collective strength and power.
